History

Our Vision (Intent)

At St. Andrew’s CE Primary School, we aim to inspire all pupils to be curious and creative thinkers who develop a complex knowledge of local and national history and that of the wider world. We want all pupils to develop the confidence to think, critically, ask questions, and be able to explain and analyse historical evidence. We aim to build an awareness of significant events and individuals in local, British and global history and recognise how things have changed over time.

We aim that all pupils will:

  • Develop an appreciation of the complexity of people’s lives, the diversity of societies and the relationships between different groups.
  • Develop an appreciation for the reasons why people may behave in the way they do, developing a sense of empathy and providing the opportunity to learn from past mistakes.
  • Make connections over periods of time and developing chronologically – secure knowledge.
  • Develop their understanding of how historians study the past and construct accounts and the skills to complete their own historical enquiries.
  • Develop the use of key subject-specific vocabulary and language.
  • Be prepared for future learning, through the introduction of key substantive concepts:
  • Power
  • Invasion
  • Settlement and migration
  • Empire
  • Civilisation
  • Religion
  • Trade
  • Human achievement
  • Society and culture
